Shor's Trial
For over a decade, death in Skyrim has meant the same thing: a black screen, a quickload, and a shove backwards in time. In a province built on martial valor and the halls of Sovngarde, that’s an anticlimax. Nords don’t rewind time.
Shor’s Trial removes the quickload crutch and replaces it with a death system that has real stakes. Every dungeon, every master vampire and every bandit boss starts to matter again, because dying now costs you something and can also pay you back.
When you die
Your health hits zero and you don’t drop into a reload. You wake in Sovngarde, with Tsun, Shield-thane of Shor, guarding the way to the Hall of Valor.
To return, you face judgment in combat. Your mortal gear and potions are stripped away and you’re given a randomized spirit loadout (steel, a bow, or raw magic). Across the clearing waits a spectral version of whatever killed you: the vampire that drained you, the bandit chief who broke your shield, the Draugr Overlord who shouted you apart.
Your quest log reads: “Defeat your killer and earn your return.” No followers, no pause-menu snacking. It’s a one-on-one fight.
If you win
“You have conquered your killer. Shor grants you passage. +1 Perk Point. Your belongings wait where you fell.”
- +1 Perk Point. Proving yourself in the afterlife permanently rewards you.
- A dragon mound return. You burst out of the nearest ancient Dragon Mound in basic linen wraps.
- A retrieval run. Your gear, gold and provisions are sealed in a knapsack at the spot where you fell, so you have to scavenge a weapon and travel back for them.
If you lose
“Your spirit was bested. Your belongings are lost to Shor’s hall, and your skills have dulled.”
- The Withering of Skill: your core skills drop by 5 across the board, and any perks above your new skill levels lock until you train back up.
- The Tithe of the Dead: your possessions go to a locked chest beside Shor’s table in the Hall of Valor. You wake in the nearest temple or dungeon cell.
- The only way back to your gear is to finish the main questline, defeat Alduin, and walk into the Hall of Valor to reclaim it.
Under the hood
- Built with the Creation Kit. Made in Bethesda’s own official modding tool.
- No script extender. It’s built on native Papyrus quests, with no SKSE or DLLs.
- Built to coexist. It doesn’t edit vanilla cells or navmeshes, so it’s designed to play nicely with large load orders. It’s flagged ESL, so it takes no regular plugin slot.
- Console-ready. It’s built for Creation Club, so Xbox and PlayStation players get it too, alongside PC players on Nexus Mods.
Where it’s coming
Shor’s Trial is free and releases in November 2026 on Nexus Mods (PC) and Creation Club (PC, Xbox and PlayStation).
